Jewelry Care

Nothing scratches a diamond. What dulls a ring is the film that builds up underneath the stone, where hand cream, soap and skin oil collect out of sight. Two minutes a month keeps it bright.

Once a month, at home

Fill a bowl with warm water and a drop of mild washing up liquid. Let the piece sit for ten minutes. Work a soft toothbrush gently under the setting and around the back of the stone, where the light enters. Rinse in clean warm water and dry on a lint free cloth.

Do not use bleach, chlorine, acetone or any abrasive paste. Chlorine attacks the alloys in gold, and abrasives leave fine scratches on the metal even though the stone is unharmed.

When to take it off

  • The gym, and anything with a bar or a handle. A hard knock is what loosens a prong.
  • Gardening, cleaning and DIY.
  • Swimming pools and hot tubs, because of the chlorine.
  • Applying hand cream, sunscreen or perfume. Put the ring on afterwards.

Sleeping in a ring is fine for most settings. If yours has a high centre stone or a delicate gallery, take it off at night.

Storing it

Keep each piece separate. A diamond is the hardest natural material there is, which means the one thing that can scratch your gold band is another diamond. The box your piece arrived in is lined for exactly this.

Once a year, send it to us

We will clean it professionally, check every prong and setting, and re-polish the metal. There is no charge for this. Email hello@diaels.com and we will arrange insured shipping both ways.

Resizing is free for the first twelve months.

If something is wrong

A stone that rattles, a prong that catches on fabric, a band that has gone oval: stop wearing the piece and contact us. All three are ordinary and all three are fixable, but wearing a ring with a loose stone is how stones get lost.
